E<\/span><\/span>arlier this month, hundreds of \u201calt-right\u201d protesters occupied the rotunda<\/a>\u00a0at Boston Common in the name of free speech. The protest included far-right grouplets old and new \u2013 from the Oath Keepers<\/a> to the Proud Boys<\/a>. But there were no swastikas or shaved heads in sight.<\/p>\n

Instead, the protest imagery was dominated<\/a> by ostensibly comedic images, mostly cribbed from forums and social media. It looked a little like an animated version of a favorite \u201calt-right\u201d message board, 4chan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"At least one attendee was dressed as the cartoon frog Pepe (a character co-opted by the movement against the wishes<\/a> of its creator). Others carried the flag of \u201cKekistan\u201d, the imaginary country created 4chan members. Kyle Chapman, the man who became the \u201cbased stick man\u201d meme<\/a> after attacking anti-fascists armed with a gas mask and a Captain America shield, also addressed the crowd. The same crowd later confronted a counter anti-fascist protest in the street.<\/p>\n
